1. The Fatal Mistake: Feature Lists vs Architecture

When an interviewer asks: "Tell me about your final year project", a junior candidate typically answers:

"My project is an online bookstore where users can register, add books to cart, and checkout with payment."

This answers what the app does for a user, not how it is engineered. The interviewer is not an end customer; they are a senior engineer evaluating your technical reasoning.

Instead, lead with:

  • The problem domain and user scale.
  • The high-level architectural pattern (e.g. monolithic layered architecture vs event-driven microservices).
  • Key technical challenges and performance bottlenecks you solved.

2. The 5-Minute Project Pitch Architecture

  1. The 30-Second Elevator Pitch: Context, purpose, and your specific technical ownership.
  2. Architecture & Component Diagram: Frontend state management, API gateway, compute services, and database choice.
  3. The Hardest Engineering Problem You Solved: e.g., handling race conditions in inventory reservation, indexing slow queries, or rate-limiting abuse.
  4. Trade-Offs: Why PostgreSQL over MongoDB? Why Redis caching? What would you redesign with 10x scale?
